1790 Burke & Rutherford County Census Records With Qualifying Ancestors

Please remember that spellings are as they appeared in the original census.  They were written as the census taker heard them, as there was no standardized spelling in 1790, and often as not, the person himself did not read or write and had no idea of the “correct” spelling of his name.  If you had (or think you might have had) an ancestor in these areas in 1790, look for any possible spelling of the name in the lists below.

A 1790 Census for Buncombe County, NC Kenneth D. Israel. Ph.D
Even though Buncombe County was not created until 1791, one is able to determine that there were people in the area who were enumerated in the 1790 Census.  Most families who were listed in the following four census companies, two of which were in Rutherford County and two of which were in Burke County were among the first families of Buncombe County.  Two companies, the Thirteenth and Fourteenth, which were enumerated in what was then Rutherford County, NC, became a part of Buncombe County when it was created in 1791.  The thirteenth Company of Rutherford County generally included the present day eastern half of Henderson County.  It included Cane Creek, Sweeten Creek, Hooper’s Creek, Mud Creek, Clear Creek, Wolfpen Creek, Green River, Hickorynut Creek and the residents who lived south of the Swanannoa River. Note: Justices of the first court of 1792 are shown in boldface-italic type.
