Penland, John

JOHN PENLAND – Born November 29, 1764 in New Castle County, PA.  Enlisted at Appis Creek, Burke County, NC in 1780 as a substitute for Robert Penland, under Capt. Kemp and was discharged in South Carolina after three months.  He enlisted again in October of the same year and started marching to Wilmington, NC, but was taken sick.  Afterwards he served about six months against the Tories and Indians.
    He married Alice Moon who was born in 1770 in NC and in 1811 they moved to Buncombe County, NC where in 1850 he and his wife were living.  He was among Rejected and Suspended Pensioners of Buncombe County.
