Hominy Baptist Church Cemetery

HOMINY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
Buncombe County, NC
DIRECTIONS: From Candler, NC take Pisgah Highway South (Rt 151) for about 3 miles. Take Hominy Baptist Church Road to the left. Follow this until it ‘T’s. The church and cemetery are on your left.
LATITUDE/LONGITUDE: 353220N 0824211W (Per USGS) on USGS 7.5’ map Enka
FIELD NOTES: 9/25/98: This cemetery is large and has always been large, so families tend to have room to occupy an “area” of the hill.  Additionally, the church which oversees the cemetery maintains it in very good physical condition and has kept records of position and years of grave markers.  The survey below follows the numbering system already in place by the church. The survey was structured so it could be used for both genealogical research and the update of existent church records, so record numbers were not changed, even though it does not always represent the exact placement. Where grave markers are part of a family grouping, and are not sequential, this is noted.
Gravestones lacking inscriptions are identified as ‘plain markers.’  It is assumed they are cut stone, but if field stones will be noted as such.  Inscribed gravestones which could not be read are identified as illegible  markers.  Numerous unmarked graves occur across the cemetery and may be seen as depressions or plots of differing vegetative cover. These are abundant within the southern portion of the cemetery where the ground surface is typically undulating.  Unmarked graves are not represented.

RESEARCHER’S ADDENDUM: The Hominy Baptist Church Cemetery survey began by meeting Willis Wright.  It was his kindness that provided me with the Gravestone Directory which contained only the names and year dates of the sites. With over 500 people interred or reserving space in the cemetery it was a good start and it matched a map created expressly for this.
The church’s last update to the information was in the early 1990’s. Already several of the stones are unreadable and the surveyor had to rely on the results of this previous survey, and with more complex materials in our atmosphere, the deterioration will only get worse.
SPECIAL THANKS: Warm thanks to Rev. Willis Wright who trusted me.
FORMAT:  Each entry begins with its number in brackets followed by any memorium (if present) which preceeds the name.  The next line, in upper-case, will be the complete name followed by the birth date, a dash (-), and the death date.  The scriptum or any additional visible material follows, including that which might appear on some other portion of the marker or even on the footstone.  Any surveyor’s comments will appear in brackets and usually at the end.
If there is any portion of the transcribed material that is in question, it will be in parenthesis ending with a question mark.  For instance “Jan 2(3?), 1887” indicates that only the “3” portion of the date is in question.  It follows that the date is somewhere between Jan 20 and Jan 29 of 1887.  If data is in conflict, it will attempted to be resolved in the surveyor’s comment section.  For instance name spelling variations and impossible dates, etc.
If more than one person is represented by a marker, then following the first person’s information, the 2nd, 3rd, etc. person’s memorium and name begins the next part.  The only time there should be a blank line is between grave markers, not individuals.
Where the word (calculate) appears for a date, the date, or a portion, can be figured from wording on the stone, but it is in the interest of faithful transcription that this information is not provided.
