“Stories of the Land: Exploring Cherokee History and Its Cultural Legacy in Western North Carolina”

Shannon Swimmer, Director of the Western Carolina University Cherokee Center will discuss Cherokee history, current issues facing the Cherokee and genealogy issues involving Native Americans. Ms. Swimmer’s mother was the person was responsible for tribe’s genealogical initiatives for the past 16 years.

Ms. Swimmer and her family are native Cherokee and have long been involved with the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Shannon has a law degree from Kansas University and a masters’ degree from WCU. In her role at WCU’s Cherokee Center, she assists WCU administrators with issues related to the success of Cherokee students and helping the campus respond to local needs.

This Webinar will be held online ON ZOOM as well as in the library on a large screen.
