When you think about
Asheville, do you wonder about those families who first settled here? They
were a diverse group of people who brought with them their varied craft,
poetry, and song. By pooling individual talents, and resources, they built
a town and lived productive lives. They were the stone cutters who built
Biltmore House; the writers, who wrote about the mountains and its people;
the doctors, whose contributions allow us to live longer lives today. When
they died, many of them were laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. |

(1830-1894) Nephew of Robert
Brank Vance (1793-1827); brother of Robert
Brank Vance (1828-1899). Born in North Carolina, May 13, 1830. Member
of North Carolina state legislature, 1854; U.S. Representative from North
Carolina, 1858-61; colonel in the Confederate Army during the Civil War;
Governor of North Carolina, 1862-65, 1877-79; U.S. Senator from North Carolina,
1879-94. Died April 14, 1894. Interment at Riverside Cemetery. Vance County,
N.C. is named for him.
Thomas Lanier Clingman
(1812-1897) of Asheville, N.C. Born in North Carolina. Member of North
Carolina state legislature; U.S. Representative from North Carolina, 1843-45,
1847-58; U.S. Senator from North Carolina, 1858-61; delegate from North
Carolina to Democratic National Convention, 1876. Interment at Riverside
