Mon, 13 Sep 1999 -- Hopefully someone can help...being from Asheville, if only I had known this link to our heritage, I would have had it resolved long ago.  My GGGrandpa was Timothy Lindsay;married: Mary Ann Boyd; David Siler Lindsay and Anna Eliza Smiley Lindsay were my GGrandparents; David Riley and Nora Carson Lindsay were my Grandparents.  Our search has been at a standstill for many years; as I have been stuck in a wheelchair for the past year, I have started searching again... we recently found out that Timothy Lindsay's father was a Mr. Lindsay and his mother was a Miss Caler...daughter of Jacob Caler.  We also found out that Jacob Caler was a Founding Father of Buncombe County; and that there are many variants of the spelling of Caler, just as there are in the spelling of Lindsay/Lindsey.  Can someone please help me find the history of Jacob; which daughter married Timothy's father; who Timothy's father was.  Their uncle George Caler was a minister...in Buncombe and Macon Counties.  ANYTHING will help.  Thanks in advance.  Daniel (Danny) Lindsay d_lindsay@yahoo.com Daniel Lindsay

Mon, 13 Sep 1999 -- I saw this book mentioned in a 1997 afrigeneas post (searching the archives!) I do NOT have any publication info, author, date, etc. Is anyone familiar with this book or seen/read it? Thanks, Marian Douglas
RICE Sunday, September 12, 1999 -- People keep mentioning the RICE - Cherokee connection.  Does anyonehave more info? I haven't seen any yet.
Isaac Rice and brothers Moses RICE and Benjamin RICE were in old Tryon County, N.C. before 1775. This was later Rutherford County. I also know that prior to his arrival in Madison County, N.C., Spencer RICE was in Montgomery County, Va on Walker's Creek with a James RICE who may have been his father or brother. I also know that those Madison County RICEs were of Cherokee extraction.  They seem to be connected to the Shelton family there as well.  It is interesting that a John RICE who died in Hawkins County, TN in 1811 had a son named Shelton RICE who moved to Kentucky before 1795.  A William RICE moved from Hawkins to Rhea Co., TN by 1825. This William had a son named William S. Rice who settled in Overton County TN by 1850, and lived near my RICE's later. Now, William S. Rice's son, George Rice, lived near some Sheltons and is believed to have been married to Hester Shelton.  I believe these families could be connected to the Madison County, N.C. area.   I would certainly like to contact anyone researching these Madison County Rice's as they might actually be connected to my bunch!  John and Isaac RICE of Roane County, TN...  Does anyone know if this Isaac Rice is related to Isaac from Madison County NC (married to Nancy Keith)?  I have Matilda RICE who is listed in 1880 Madison County census, age 37.  I am trying to figure out who her parents were. Spencer and Sara Jane RICE had a daughter Matilda, but she was much younger than my Matilda, but probably were related.   Any clues welcomed.  Thanks, Marian Douglas in Macedonia

MILLER
DYKES
Tuesday, September 07, 1999 -- Hello my name is Mary Ann (Dykes) Edmond. I've recently begun researching my maternal (MILLER - Cocke County , TN) and paternal (DYKES from Cocke County, but originally from Cave Springs, GA) family histories. Any information about these families would be appreciated. However, I am particularly interested in any research that has been done about black brick and rock masons.
My maternal Grandfather - David William and Jim (James) MILLER were very fine rock masons in East Tn - Cocke and Green counties, particularly and in Western N.C. I have no idea how they acquired these skills and am interested in trends or tib-bit about this profession. I have tracked down two buildings built by them and suspect many more. How do I go about finding out who the contractors were for other building I suspect they built.
My Paternal Grandfather - Rev. Henry Roland Sanford DYKES - was a brick mason. He contracted and taught all of his sons, my father Percival included, this trade. They built buildings all over East Tn and Western N. C. I am trying to acquire pictures of buildings built by my family members. Some I already know about. The Dykes were the contractor for the present Cocke County Court House, American Legion Building and a magnificant Orphanage in Sevier County two churches, to name a few. One of his sons, DeWitt,  founded the first AA owned Architectural firm in Knoxville. I have a great list of the buildings he designed.
Any help in trying to figure out how my Grandfathers learned their trade will be greatly appreciated and also, how to track down more of their work. Any info should be e-mail to: Mary Dykes Edmond

BRAMLETT
Tuesday, August 17, 1999 -- I am trying to find who the parents of Robert RAY were. He was born 1793 and it is believed he was born in Buncombie County, NC. At the age of 12 he apparently eluded his father. He may have been part Cherokee and this is the reason he was disliked by his mother. Robert settled in GA and married Mary BRAMLETT. He died and is buried in Gilmer County, Ga. I have been able to trace my family back to Robert but until I can learn who his parents were. I can not proceed. Any information, lore or otherwise will be greatly appricated. Homer Ray

Fri, 13 Aug 1999 -- Hello from Rome, Hank, I'm determined in my Smoky Mtn. family search.  Realize that my families were in Madison, Yancey and Buncombe counties.  Not yet sure how they circulated, but maybe they wound up in Buncombe.  Found a record for Matilda Rice and Spencer Rice at White Rock, Madison County in 1870.  I think Spencer was Matilda's father.  Someone sent me info that Spencer was married to Sara Jane Wallin, but I don't have a copy of marriage record yet.  Matilda was born in 1867, but I don't yet know where.  Spencer Rice was born in Yancey Co., but I don't know when, or who his parents were.  Could you share any gen contacts (especially who have email) in Madison and Yancey? Tuesday, August 10, 1999 -- Washington County, Virginia about 1770 - 1840; I am seeking information on the parents and siblings of John WHEELER, born in Washington County, Virginia in 1793/4.There seems to me to be a gap of one or two generations in this line that have held us all up for quite some time.  I hope to start a thread which will lead to a resolution of the questions which remain unanswered about these WHEELERs.  I have reviewed posts from various internet sites and recognize many names of those with whom Ive corresponded concerning this line, and I still hope that through our combined efforts these WHEELERs will yet be sorted out.  I have attempted to use your information accurately and any errors are mine.  I welcome any additions or corrections. I have not personally seen any of the census records mentioned here.  If anyone can doublecheck or expand on the census information here Id be deeply grateful. My belief is that all WHEELERs in Washington County, VA, in 1770 - 1820 were related to and likely descended from James WHEELER "My" John WHEELER, b. 1793/4 in Washington County VA, may have seen service in the War of 1812.  By about 1820 he had made the short move from Washington County VA to Buncombe (became Yancey in 1833) County NC.  Here he married Rhoda RAY, only daughter of Thomas RAY, Jr. and Ivey HENSLEY.  Rhoda had eight brothers.  The RAYS were at one time the largest landholders in Yancey County.  John WHEELER was a "Baptist Clergyman" and was affiliated with the Pensacola Baptist Church. It may be that David C. and Minerva Jane WHEELER both died young, without children.  When Thomas Ray, Jr. died he left a life estate in several thousand acres to his only daughter, Rhoda Ray WHEELER, with the land to go after her death to the "heirs of her body".  This seems to have been done in 1/9 shares, indicating that only nine of the eleven children survived their mother, and that the two who predeceased her left no issue.  Kevin White

CLAYTON Sunday, July 25, 1999 -- I am searching for information about Ephraim CLAYTON.  He was a contractor in western North Carolina. A number of his buildings are still standing, although many more have been torn down.  Two notable examples still standing are one or more buildings at Wofford College, Spartanburg, SC and the Polk County, NC Courthouse in Columbus now undergoing restoration.  During the Civil War he manufactured supplies for the Confederate Army and later worked with the railsroads.  Many of his ventures seem to have been financial failures or else he had difficulties getting paid.  He seems to have had a business partnership with George W. Shakelford.  So far, I've identified the following still standing: Polk County Courthouse; St. John in the Wilderness (he was part of the rebuilding 1852-54); John Wesley McElroy House, ca. 1845 in Yancy Co.; Ravenscroft School, ca. 1840, Asheville; the tower of Calvary Church Fletcher, survives, the church burned in 1934.) !
He seems to have been the contractor of many courthouses, which no longer exist; also the Presbyterian Church in Marion, but I am not sure if it still exists.  I also wonder if he was the contractor of the first building of Mars Hill College (no longer standing). I am also curious as to where he would have received his education.  As the son of Lambert Clayton, he would have lived in present day Transylvania County.  He was born in 1804, so the time frame would be after 1810. Virginia S. Green
CLAYTON Sunday, July 25, 1999 --  I am in the processing of revising, correcting and making additions to my Book "The Clayton Clique, the Descendants of George Clayton, 1723-1786"  George CLAYTON was the father of George CLAYTON (1751-1814) and Lambert Clayton (1755-1828) and six daughters: Henrietta who married Alexander Davidson; Rebecca who married Robert Oliphant; Rachel who married John Falls; Margaret who married Robert Neill; Anna who married Thomas Cooke; and Hannah who married James Neill. Many of the children of George CLAYTON (1751-1814), and the Neills came to present day western North Carolina as well as Lambert Clayton and his descendants.  I will be happy to search my files for individuals .Virginia S. COATES Sat, 24 Jul 1999 -- Where would I obtain information of a prisoner that died while serving time? This specific prisoner, COATES, Garet Defate  was serving a sentence in Buncombe County, and died 1904. How can I find his burial site, was his body released to the family, etc? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Jan C. Plemmons  Previous reply from NC Division of Archives and History ...[Since he died before l909, there will be no death certificate.  Perhaps Buncombe County can provide you with some information on where they buried their prisoners.  I have also sent a copy of your request to our cemetery survey coordinator and she will let you know if she has any information on a Buncombe County prison cemetery or on a grave site for your Mr. Coates. Beyond those few ideas, I am at a loss since there was no real statewide policy governing local arrange- ments for deceased prisoners.  I would assume that if the family was nearby, they would have made arrangements for the body to be buried in a family plot, but that if this was not done, the prisoner would be buried in either a prison graveyard or a city cemetery.]
