CRAIG STEPHENSON	Sat, 30 Jan 1999 -- My; great, great, grandmother was born as Martha Roseanna Stephenson on April 17 of 1824 or 1825. It is believed that her parents were Alfred Stephenson and Mattie Craig. It is believed that she lived in the Bull Creek section of Buncombe County all of her life. She married John Longmire Rice. He died during the Civil War and she lived until 1902. I am interested in knowing whether anyone can place either Alfred Stephenson or Mattie Craig into the Stephenson or Craig families who settled in Buncombe. Holt

TAYLOR BROOKS	Fri, 22 Jan 1999-- I am looking for ancestors of Robert TAYLOR and Canizada BROOKS from Lower Hominy Township in Buncombe County. They came from South Carolina. He worked on the Biltmore Estate that is were my grandfather was born in 1897. Robert was born in 1842 died 1897 Canizada was born in 1844 died 1919 As far as I can tell they and Charles moved to Black Mountain around 1900 They are both buried in Gashes Creek Cemetary in Asheville. Hannay Ryan marries Birch ALLISON in 1811 they have a daughter Anna Allison born 4 Jan 1812 (no other children listed). Anna Allison on 19 Feb 1828 marries John C. PARTON who was born 6 Sep 1806. Their children are: Jane 15 May 1829; Nancy 30 Oct 1831; Mary Ann 21 Aug 1837 Jane Parton on 24 Aug 1842 marries William Bird, their children are: Elizabeth 9 Jan 1843; Mary Jane 23 May 1845; Nancy Evaline 3 May 1847; Sarah Naomi 24 Jun 1849 Charles Porter Bird 28 Mar 1852. Nancy Evaline on 19 Dec 1866 marries Fedella Fletcher Bartlett born 18 Jan 1836. Their sons: John William Bartlett b:1 Nov 1869 ; Joseph Mitchell b 1 Nov 1869 are born in North Carolina. The Bartletts then move to Cocke Cty TN where: Alfred Royal 1871; Naomi Melinda 1873; Anna Elvina 1875; Swan Littleburg 1877; Sanford Fidella 1879; Charles James 1881; Mollie Magdalene 1884; are born. BURTON McCRARY	Thu, 21 Jan 1999 -- Hi all, I have been researching Thomas BURTON's wife, Phebe McCRARY. I have found some information on her, but can't determine if she is BURTON's wife. I know Thomas and Phebe had a son William BURTON in 1799. I also know that Thomas died in Buncombe County in 1802. Phebe was born (in 1780 or abt 1778). FOX	Thu, 07 Jan 1999 -- I have an ancestor, William Lee Fox b.1809 Burke Co., NC. His fathers' name was possibly William Fox. They moved to Jackson Co., Illinois by 1818 where they are on the state census. I would think William may have been in the war of 1812 as So. Illinois was settled with war warrants. William Lee m. BOYD BUCKNER GROOMS RAMSEY WOODWARD WORLEY	Sat, 02 Jan 1999 -- Looking for info on Henry Buckner born about 1744, he had a son named John, who was born about 1765. John was married twice: 1. Nancy ?, 2. Elizabeth Lucretia Tatum. There are 15 children credited to old John but I'm not sure which was Nancy's and which was Lucretia's. But...he did have a son named Tatum who was married to a Martha ?, and I'm sure with a given name that's the same as Lucretia's maiden name, it's fairly safe to assume that Tatum Buckner was Lucretia's and John's son. I am trying to prove that this is the Tatum Buckners parents and forefathers I am descended from. John died 1854 in Madison Co. Other children of this Henry and his first wife Mary Foster (he married at least twice and probably a third time) were: 1. David b. abt 1763, 2.John, as previously mentioned, b. abt. 1765, 3. MORTON	Fri, 1 Jan 1999 -- Our family has been searching for over 35 years for the ancestors of David MORTON born between 1790-1800 in Buncombe Co, NC. It is our understanding that David had three brothers (George, Thomas and one unnamed) and one sister (Mary Ann) who accompanied him to East Tennessee -- Union/Anderson, County. It is my further understanding that the oldest son would have stayed and inherited the family property. I have always thought that our David might be the son of James MORTON who was the son of Samuel MORTON of Buncombe County, son of Robert MORTON of PA/NC, but I can find no records. SMITH	Fri, 19 Feb 1999 -- My great grandparents William and Leafy (Letha) SMITH lived in NC from about 1919 until their deaths- Leafy, shortly after the birth of my grandfather on Dec. 10, 1921, who was also William A. Smith. William, died at the Oteen Veterans Camp of tuberculosis on May 11, 1922. I have been unable to locate any info about them.. He was the youngest son of Phillip Britton and Anna MAXWELL Justice. My father left there many years ago so I never knew any of his people. He died in 1949 in Starkville, MS. My mother remarried in 1952 and we moved to Arkansas and I do not know anyone who may be my relatives. My uncle, Thomas Stinson Justice, left there too and he divorced his first wife and married again and had 2 girls: one, Mercedes and one Esther May. I know them well. Esther May lives only 60 miles from me and her sister lives in OK. My mother is still living in Waldo. AR. Here is what I know about her: She was born November 2, 1826 (probably in what was then Yancey County but later become Madison County, NC. She married Thomas Jefferson COLE (son of Jesse COLE of Buncombe County, NC) in Madison Co., NC. The marriage records in the Madison County courthouse list April 1, 1855 as the marriage date. She was called "Polly Ann" COLE and lived the rest of her adult life in Cole's Cove, Flat Creek, Buncombe County, NC. She bore five children, including my grandmother. Her husband died in 1865 and she raised the young family alone. She died in Flat Creek on November 2, 1911 and is buried in Clark's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery, Weaverville, NC. Thanks! KOGER WILLIS FINNEY BOYD	Tue, 02 Feb 1999 -- My mother Rachael Dorcas KOGER and her mother Janey (Johnson) KOGER Lived in Greensboro, North Carolina with her two other sisters Mary and Elsie at 972 McGee Street. My mother married Clinton Edward WILLIS. I am unable to find a birth certificate for my father who notes on all of our birth certificates that he was born in Iowa (Clinton, I believe). I am trying to locate any information like the census which would show my mother and father residing together in North Carolina or even marrying there. My mother's birth date June 3, 1900, my father's June 8, 1893, and my grandmother's December 1863. My grandfather Daniel KOGER shows as being deceased as of 1900 so have no ideas about him either. More than 14,000 United Empire Loyalists were deported to Saint John, New Brunswick and parts of Nova Scotia after the Revolution, some being my ancestors from PA, VA & the Carolinas. BROOKS TAYLOR	Thursday, April 15, 1999 -- I am seeking information on Canizada (Brooks) Taylor who was the mother of Charles H.Taylor Sr. of Black Mountain, North Carolina. she was married to Robert Lee Taylor. Both were born in South Carolina. Canizada 1844 died in Buncombe County in 1919. Robert Lee Taylor 1842 died in Buncombe in 1897 Childern; 1880: Margret 14, Pinkney 13, James 10, William 8, Anna 5, Samuel 3. Canizada had a brother who also lived with them, Jesse Brooks 28. They lived at that time in Lower Hominy Township. Robert sold his land to the Biltmore Estate then moved to Black Mountain. I believe his father was James Taylor who worked there when it was being built. Canizada and Robert Lee are buried in Gashes Creek Cemetery off of hy.74 and I-40 in Asheville, N.C. PROCTOR BRADY	Wednesday, April 14, 1999 -- My grandmother, Josephine Brady PROCTOR, contracted tuberculosis and went to a treatment center of some kind in Asheville. I have pictures of the hospital and it seems to be run by some religious order. She died in 1925; I do not know if she died in Asheville or came home to Emanuel County, GA to die. Saying Origin	Thu, 20 May 1999 -- Enjoyed your site with the origins of a lot of common sayings. I am trying to find the origin of a saying which my father used the other day (he is 84) and which his grandmother and mother used. He is currently in a nursing home and when talking about the residents in the Alzheimers Unit he said "Most of them don't know Jimmy's dead." meaning that they were not aware of what is going on around them. LEE QUEEN LANKFORD	Monday, May 10, 1999 -- I am looking for information on the family of my gggrandfather- JOHN BELL LEE. according to his death certificate he was born in 1843 in Tennessee and died on May 27, 1927. He is listed in the 1880 census of Henderson County. The census shows that he was born in N.C., his father was born in Tenn., and his mother was born in N.C. He is buried in Nesbitt's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. He was married 1st ot JUDA ANN BRANNON QUEEN and they had the folowin children: William T. Mary, Sarah, Eliza Catherine, Emma and Lilley. He married 2nd Mary Elizabeth Lankford. He served in the Civil War in CO A 25th NC INF CSA. I think that it is possible that he is of Indian descent, as I have been told that my ggrandmother was 1/2 Cherokee. This is all that I know. ENGLAND	Wed, 30 Jun 1999 -- Hi. I'm a fellow genealogical searcher. My search is for the family of Edward ENGLAND, of the McDowell County area, the next county east of and adjacent to Buncombe. He was born in 1886, had a brother named Walter, was orphaned, went to an orphanage called, I think, Warren Wilson ?? which later became, I think, Warren Wilson College. It's located near Old Fort. One reason my search is blocked is because that orphanage burned down in about 1900, losing all records. Since your search (see WEBB below) is later...1908 or so, you may find that source of interest to your efforts. At some time between 1886 and 1906 Edward became a foster child of the Greenlee and/or Tate family in the area. Any clues regarding his lineage would be greatly appreciated. Good luck in your search. BARNWELL ROWLAND WALTON	Tuesday, June 29, 1999 -- Looking for a photo of George L. BARNWELL. George was born 4-1862 probably in Forsyth Co., GA. His parents were William Warren and Martha A. M. (Malinda) WHITFIELD BARNWELL. He married Julia Ann ROWLAND 1st and Fannie WALTON 2nd. He had the following children: Myrtie, Duffy L., Tomy E., Addie E., Rufus E., Grady B., and Ida Mae. He served as pastor to numerous churches in the Forsyth Co., GA area from 1891 til the early 1900's. He moved to Candler, NC in the early 1900's with wife Fannie and possibly some children. He died in 1942 and was brought to Crossroads Baptist Church to be buried. Fannie died in 1969 and was brought back to Crossroads. Supposedly Fannie was a nurse and was buried in her nurses uniform. He was so prominent in the Forsyth Co. churches I am certain that he would have been involved in the churches in Candler. Any help would be greatly appreciated. WEBB	Mon, 28 Jun 1999 -- I am going to be in Asheville near the end of July and I am hoping to find and search old records for Asheville or Buncombe County schools. I am open to suggestions or would appreciate any information that will shorten my search. Here is what I am faced with finding. My father was orphaned in Asheville in January 1908, and he was placed in an orphanage, I do not have any clue as to the name or place of the orphanage. However, I do think it was in Buncombe Co. I have heard mention that he may have attended Orange Street School, but I don't know if it even existed during this time frame. I feel like my father attended school in Buncombe Co. between 1906 and 1917 before he ran away from the orphanage. My father's name was James Webb, and he had a brother named Carl W. Webb, and a sister named Pansy Webb. All three were at the same orphanage and most likely attended the same school. About 1910, Pansy was place in a foster home with a family named McLamb near Benson, NC (I have no records to prove this, but older family members think that this is correct). MCDOWELL	Friday, June 25, 1999 -- Daniel MCDOWELL first shows up on the 1800 Buncombe County census. He is 26-45 years of age with a young wife and 4 children. His parents are unknown as are his wives and most of his children. After 1808, he lived in Haywood County where he was Sheriff. He stayed there in 1810 but in 1820, there is a Daniel MCDOWELL back in Buncombe county 45+ with wife and 4 children again. There is still a Daniel McDowell in Haywood County only he is living by himself but is 45+ years of age. Are these the same men and he owns two properties? Daniel left NC not long after 1820 and migrated to Georgia. The only two children who can be definitely attributed to Daniel are Cynthia McDowell Haynes born 1800-1802 and Lucinda McDowell Watson born 1818. `CLAYTON`	Sunday, July 25, 1999 -- I am searching for information about Ephraim CLAYTON. He was a contractor in western North Carolina. A number of his buildings are still standing, although many more have been torn down. Two notable examples still standing are one or more buildings at Wofford College, Spartanburg, SC and the Polk County, NC Courthouse in Columbus now undergoing restoration. During the Civil War he manufactured supplies for the Confederate Army and later worked with the railroads. Many of his ventures seem to have been financial failures or else he had difficulties getting paid. He seems to have had a business partnership with George W. Shakelford. So far, I've identified the following still standing: Polk County Courthouse; St. John in the Wilderness (he was part of the rebuilding 1852-54); John Wesley McElroy House, ca. 1845 in Yancey Co.; Ravenscroft School, ca. 1840, Asheville; the tower of Calvary Church Fletcher, survives, the church burned in 1934.) ! He seems to have been the contractor of many courthouses, which no longer exist; also the Presbyterian Church in Marion, but I am not sure if it still exists. I also wonder if he was the contractor of the first building of Mars Hill College (no longer standing). I am also curious as to where he would have received his education. As the son of Lambert Clayton, he would have lived in present day Transylvania County. He was born in 1804, so the time frame would be after 1810. Virginia S. Green

`RAY` `BRAMLETT`	Tuesday, August 17, 1999 -- I am trying to find who the parents of Robert RAY were. He was born 1793 and it is believed he was born in Buncombe County, NC. Lore has it he ran away from home several times before the age of 12 because his mother did not like him but was always caught by his father and returned. At the age of 12 he apparently eluded his father. He may have been part Cherokee and this is the reason he was disliked by his mother. Robert settled in GA and married Mary BRAMLETT. He died and is buried in Gilmer County, Ga. I have been able to trace my family back to Robert but until I can learn who his parents were. I can not proceed. Andrew Jackson TRANBARGER was a brother of my gg-grandfather, both born in Washington County, Virginia, Andrew in 1818. He is believed to have married Eliza J. BAILEY in Buncombe County on Sept. 5, 1846. Andrew was in Buncombe in 1840 and possibly before as he was named on deeds as surety for his father for land purchases in the 1830s in Virginia. Andrew's descendants state he went to Texas in 1852 and to Missouri in 1853 where he raised his family and died. I have reviewed posts from various internet sites and recognize many names of those with whom I've corresponded concerning this line, and I still hope that through our combined efforts these WHEELERs will yet be sorted out. My belief is that all WHEELERs in Washington County, VA, in 1770 - 1820 were related to and likely descended from James WHEELER "My" John WHEELER, b. 1793/4 in Washington County VA, may have seen service in the War of 1812. By about 1820 he had made the short move from Washington County VA to Buncombe (became Yancey in 1833) County NC. Here he married Rhoda RAY, only daughter of Thomas RAY, Jr. and Ivey HENSLEY. We also found out that Jacob Caler was a Founding Father of Buncombe County; and that there are many variants of the spelling of Caler, just as there are in the spelling of Lindsay/Lindsey. `RICE`	`Sunday, September 12, 1999 -- People keep mentioning the RICE - Cherokee connection. Does anyone have more info? I haven't seen any yet.` Isaac Rice and brothers Moses RICE and Benjamin RICE were in old Tryon County, N.C. before 1775. This was later Rutherford County. I also know that prior to his arrival in Madison County, N.C., Spencer RICE was in Montgomery County, Va on Walker's Creek with a James RICE who may have been his father or brother. I also know that those Madison County RICEs were of Cherokee extraction. They seem to be connected to the Shelton family there as well. It is interesting that a John RICE who died in Hawkins County, TN in 1811 had a son named Shelton RICE who moved to Kentucky before 1795. A William RICE moved from Hawkins to Rhea Co., TN by 1825. This William had a son named William S. Rice who settled in Overton County TN by 1850, and lived near my RICE's later. Now, William S. Rice's son, George Rice, lived near some Sheltons and is believed to have been married to Hester Shelton. I believe these families could be connected to the Madison County, N.C. area. I would certainly like to contact anyone researching these Madison County Rice's as they might actually be connected to my bunch! John and Isaac RICE of Roane County, TN... I have no idea how they acquired these skills and am interested in trends or tidbit about this profession. I have tracked down two buildings built by them and suspect many more. How do I go about finding out who the contractors were for other building I suspect they built.` My Paternal Grandfather - Rev. Henry Roland Sanford DYKES - was a brick mason. He contracted and taught all of his sons, my father Percival included, this trade. They built buildings all over East TN and Western N. C. I am trying to acquire pictures of buildings built by my family members. Some I already know about. The Dykes were the contractor for the present Cocke County Court House, American Legion Building and a magnificent Orphanage in Sevier County two churches, to name a few. One of his sons, DeWitt, founded the first AA owned Architectural firm in Knoxville. I have an ancestor, Charles Bradford DUSENBURY, and his wife, Lula MARTIN DUSENBURY who lived in Asheville. He served as a Presbyterian minister, raised his family there and died there. Twice I have written to the courthouse to get death certificates and they say they have none for those persons. I have called and written the library to get obituaries and have not gotten a response. Sun, 17 Oct 1999 -- I am looking for any information on William Bryan Dixon. I think he was born around 1898, place unknown, married Zora Jones around 1918, had one child, Virginia. My great grandfather was William Lee FRANCIS who married Iva SNELSON. Iva SNELSON was the daughter of Robert Levi SNELSON and Decie SLUDER. Other children of Robert and Decie were Zennie Snelson who married Jonie SEAY. There son, who still lives in the area, is Robert Hugh SEAY. They had two sons, the first was Ferdie. There second son, Orville, died at age 5. Another daughter of Robert and Decie is Leatha Snelson who married Robert SANDIDGE. (Leatha, who was born in Haywood Co. in 1898, is still living at the age of 101). From what my grandmother, Pauline Francis Abstance, has told me, the family was fairly prominent in Bryson City in the early part of the century.
