BROWN CHASTAIN CALHOUN DOWNS THORN POFF CARTER WELDON WATSON MARTIN |
August 20, 2003 David BROWN, born about 1795 in North Carolina was married to Rhoda CHASTAIN about 1828. Was David's father Robert BROWN of Buncombe County in the 1800 census - surely in the area which became Haywood County in 1808? Robert appeared in Haywood County censuses through 1840, when in his 70's. In 1830 Haywood County census Robert was in his 60's, living near David in his 30's and Hugh BROWN, also a possible son. Children of David and Rhoda, born 1829-1849: William married Susan DOWNS; Mary Ann (Polly) married Jeremiah CALHOUN; Abraham married Sarah THORN and Dilla Albright POFF; Martha Jane married Isaac CARTER and George WELDON; Nancy E.; Robert married Sarah MARTIN; David married Charlotte; Samuel; Jason; and Rhoda Frances married Mr. WILLIAMS and Andrew WATSON. have moved in this year to Buncombe) and his mother was Elizabeth ROGERS,
b:1785 - 1786 in NC. I have no proof of Elizabeth's parents, but I feel
sure that she had a brother whose first name started with "D". In the
1850 Census of Buncombe Co she and Benjamin lived next to a man and his
family and his name was only given as D. ROGERS. D. ROGERS was a close
age to Elizabeth. If anyone has information on this family, please
let me hear from you. |

HEIDE |
July 30, 2003 I am looking for information on Christian H. HEIDE born abt. 1843 in Denmark. He was the husband of a distant relative in Wilmington, NC. He and his wife lost 3 infant children and she died shortly after the third child's death. Family information reports that he was so upset upon losing all his children and his wife that he moved far away to western NC. While I have been able to find him listed in the Buncombe Co. 1910 Federal Census, I have not been able to locate a death date or cemetery where he and his second wife are buried. Since his surname was not carried over in our families in eastern NC due to the death of all of his children, we have elected to use the "Heide" surname as a given name and it his been repeated through several generations. The lovely gravestone and inscription he had made for his first wife is quite touching and can be seen in a family cemetery in Wilmington, NC. Any information leading to his gravesite and date of death would be greatly appreciated. Betty Ashler |

MURRY ANDERSON |
June 3, 2003 MURRY & ANDERSON Searching for information on William MURRY (b. 5 March 1767/69) and Rachel ANDERSON (b. 14 April 1769) both supposedly born and married in Buncombe Co. (m. either April 23 or Dec 23, 1788). They subsequently immigrated to McNairy Co., TN. Our family has been unable to identify the names of their parents. They both may be of Scottish descent who have traditional family naming guidelines. The second son, usually is named for a paternal grandfather, was named Abel and there is an Abel ANDERSON in the 1800 census who may be the father of Rachel. Their other sons (Miles and James) born in Buncombe do not seem to follow family name traditions. We would appreciate help on identifying the parents of William and Rachel. It is an interesting family who has the famous author William Faulkner in its descendancy. A family member has reported that in his biography, Faulkner reports that his grandfather fought at the famous Scottish/English civil war - the Battle of Culloden. Thank you, Catherine Roberts Anderson |
