They had children Sophia Hyatt PENLAND b. ca 1841; Robert Brank PENLAND b ca 1844 NC; and George Christopher PENLAND b. ca 1851. Are there more children? Did Alexander and Mary HYATT PENLAND stay in NC? Where are they buried. Also looking for information (children/sibling) on James H. Mary Polly HYATT was b. ca 1812, Reems Creek, Buncombe Co., NC. Children of this union included: Shadrick A., b. ca 1835; William S., b ca 1836; James A. b. ca 1837; David H. b ca 1838; Mary b ca 1840; Lucinda ca 1841; Thadeus b ca 1844; Phoebe b ca 1846; John Elbert b ca 1849; Rebecca b. ca 1852. He was shown in the Gilmer Co., Ellijay, GA 1870 Census. There are no children listed in the 1870 Census, however, other sources indicate that he had 9 children but I have only four listed and they are: Matilda HYATT, b. ca 1837; Elizabeth HYATT, b. ca 1841; James W. HYATT b. ca 1844; and Mahala HYATT b. ca 1847. All children are listed as being born in N C. According to the 1870 Census he "worked in mill". SPENCER GOAD |
October 19, 2000 SPENCER, GOAD Here's the family story: Robert GOAD was supposed to be one of John Sevier's long riders (FACT: they were indeed cousins). While in Buncombe County, he met and fell in love with Isabelle (SPENCER?) an indentured servant. They eloped and fled to Robert's farm on Big Reed Island River in what is now Carroll County ,Va. Supposedly, Isabelle's "master" tracked her down, but when he found her she and Robert had several little children her "master" released her and went home without her. (FACT: Robert and Isabelle were on the farm in 1786). Everyone pretty much agrees with the legend to this point; but sometimes she is an 'indentured servant from England' but speculation is that she may have been Melungeon or possibly Mulatto. My question is this: Were there SPENCER's in Buncombe in the late 1700's? Does anyone have any family stories about the relative that "ran away?" Any information GREATLY appreciated! Janice Hudnall |

September 7, 2000 The 1910 U.S. Census of Asheville lists my great- grandmother, Margaret JUSTUS, with her son (my grandfather), 11-month-old Harry JUSTUS. Later that year, Harry was indentured to David Foster Stevens and his wife Joseph(ine) Dillingham Stevens. Harry Justus then became Harry Stevens. We have no information about the birth mother, Margaret (Maggie) JUSTUS, except for a copy of the indentureship contract. The 1910 U.S. Census lists Margaret JUSTUS and son Harry living in a house at 143 Broad St. (at the time, near Central and Charlotte streets) in Asheville. The head of this household was William W. GOLDSMITH, a jeweler originally from Spain. Margaret JUSTUS was listed as a servant. According to the 1900 U.S. Census, William W. GOLDSMITH was married to Emily and they originally had six children: Stella, William W. Jr., Alda (Alma?), John, Mercedes and Carlos. We have looked in censuses, cemetery records, civil records, etc. ut have found no record of Margaret JUSTUS other than the 1910 Census. We are hoping that some descendent of her employer may have information about her. The 1910 Census also lists Margaret JUSTUS as having two other living children besides my grandfather Harry. Any information about these children would be greatly appreciated as well. If you have any information regarding this GOLDSMITH family or Margaret (Maggie) JUSTUS and her children, please contact Rachel |

Patton |
September 7, 2000 I have read with fascination the information on the various Pattons in this site. For years I have searched for a KENNEDY/PATTON connection which I believe exists possibly from VA or GA. Reasons: #1 My grandfather was Charles Patton KENNEDY. No one I know of in the family with the name of PATTON. He was the son of William Mallory KENNEDY. #2. The grandmother of William Mallory KENNEDY was Dorothy MALLORY who had married Robert JARRETT and when he died 1785 Dorothy m Charles KENNEDY of Pendleton Distr. SC. Dorothy MALLORY was the daughter of William MALLORY of Culpeper Co., Va and sister of Ann MALLORY who m Col. John C. PATTON of Buncombe Co., NC. #3. After the death of the father, James KENNEDY, the orphaned children, William Mallory KENNEDY (above), Dorothy, Mary Ann, and Charles KENNEDY were with John M. PATTON in Gordon Co., GA in 1850. I do not know who this PATTON was or what his relationship to the Kennedy children might have been. Nearby in Gordon Co. GA was a BOWMAN family and the other child of James KENNEDY, George, was listed as an "inmate" there along with a girl named Sarah MULKEY, whom he later married. Last, not least, but perhaps connected was John Patton KENNEDY who was b in Habersham Co, GA ca 1829. There were Kennedy's in Habersham about that time along with the stepson of Charles KENNEDY, Devereaux Jarrett of the Travelers Rest history. The family of John Patton KENNEDY left Habersham and was later in Gordon Co., GA about the time John PATTON was there and the children of James KENNEDY. Later, John Patton KENNEDY and family were in Albertville, AL where they remained till they died and are buried there. The KENNEDY family (Charles and Dorothy Mallory KENNEDY) left SC and were in Madison Co., AL ca 1809. These may all be just coincidence, but I have not found any easy way to make a connection. Hoping someone can be able to tell me if they know of any connection whatsoever to the Kennedys and Pattons. The father of John PATTON of Gordon Co., Ga was said to have been born in Ireland. John PATTON was in Spottsylvania or Pittsylvania, VA before going to Gordon Co. GA. I believe he was most likely married more than once, but he apparently married a HARRIS the first time around. Any information or clues will be deeply appreciated. Geri Kennedy-Young |
