Mary Polly HYATT was b. ca 1812, Reems Creek, Buncombe Co., NC. HYATT b. ca 1844; and Mahala HYATT b. ca 1847. All children are listed as being born in N C. According to the 1870 Census he "worked in mill". SPENCER GOAD |
October 19, 2000 SPENCER, GOAD Here's the family story: Robert GOAD was supposed to be one of John Sevier's long riders (FACT: they were indeed cousins). While in Buncombe County, he met and fell in love with Isabelle (SPENCER?) an indentured servant. They eloped and fled to Robert's farm on Big Reed Island River in what is now Carroll County ,Va. Supposedly, Isabelle's "master" tracked her down, but when he found her she and Robert had several little children her "master" released her and went home without her. (FACT: Robert and Isabelle were on the farm in 1786). Everyone pretty much agrees with the legend to this point; but sometimes she is an 'indentured servant from England' but speculation is that she may have been Melungeon or possibly Mulatto. My question is this: Were there SPENCER's in Buncombe in the late 1700's? Does anyone have any family stories about the relative that "ran away?" Any information GREATLY appreciated! Janice Hudnall |

September 7, 2000 The 1910 U.S. Census of Asheville lists my great- grandmother, Margaret JUSTUS, with her son (my grandfather), 11-month-old Harry JUSTUS. Later that year, Harry was indentured to David Foster Stevens and his wife Joseph(ine) Dillingham Stevens. Harry Justus then became Harry Stevens. We have no information about the birth mother, Margaret (Maggie) JUSTUS, except for a copy of the indentureship contract. The 1910 U.S. Census lists Margaret JUSTUS and son Harry living in a house at 143 Broad St. (at the time, near Central and Charlotte streets) in Asheville. The head of this household was William W. GOLDSMITH, a jeweler originally from Spain. Margaret JUSTUS was listed as a servant. According to the 1900 U.S. Census, William W. GOLDSMITH was married to Emily and they originally had six children: Stella, William W. Jr., Alda (Alma?), John, Mercedes and Carlos. We have looked in censuses, cemetery records, civil records, etc. ut have found no record of Margaret JUSTUS other than the 1910 Census. We are hoping that some descendent of her employer may have information about her. The 1910 Census also lists Margaret JUSTUS as having two other living children besides my grandfather Harry. Any information about these children would be greatly appreciated as well. If you have any information regarding this GOLDSMITH family or Margaret (Maggie) JUSTUS and her children, please contact Rachel |

Patton |
September 7, 2000 I have read with fascination the information on the various Pattons in this site. For years I have searched for a KENNEDY/PATTON connection which I believe exists possibly from VA or GA. Reasons: #1 My grandfather was Charles Patton KENNEDY. No one I know of in the family with the name of PATTON. He was the son of William Mallory KENNEDY. #2. The grandmother of William Mallory KENNEDY was Dorothy MALLORY who had married Robert JARRETT and when he died 1785 Dorothy m Charles KENNEDY of Pendleton Distr. SC. Dorothy MALLORY was the daughter of William MALLORY of Culpeper Co., Va and sister of Ann MALLORY who m Col. John C. PATTON of Buncombe Co., NC. #3. After the death of the father, James KENNEDY, the orphaned children, William Mallory KENNEDY (above), Dorothy, Mary Ann, and Charles KENNEDY were with John M. PATTON in Gordon Co., GA in 1850. I do not know who this PATTON was or what his relationship to the Kennedy children might have been. Nearby in Gordon Co. GA was a BOWMAN family and the other child of James KENNEDY, George, was listed as an "inmate" there along with a girl named Sarah MULKEY, whom he later married. Last, not least, but perhaps connected was John Patton KENNEDY who was b in Habersham Co, GA ca 1829. There were Kennedy's in Habersham about that time along with the stepson of Charles KENNEDY, Devereaux Jarrett of the Travelers Rest history. The family of John Patton KENNEDY left Habersham and was later in Gordon Co., GA about the time John PATTON was there and the children of James KENNEDY. Later, John Patton KENNEDY and family were in Albertville, AL where they remained till they died and are buried there. The KENNEDY family (Charles and Dorothy Mallory KENNEDY) left SC and were in Madison Co., AL ca 1809. These may all be just coincidence, but I have not found any easy way to make a connection. Hoping someone can be able to tell me if they know of any connection whatsoever to the Kennedys and Pattons. The father of John PATTON of Gordon Co., Ga was said to have been born in Ireland. John PATTON was in Spottsylvania or Pittsylvania, VA before going to Gordon Co. GA. I believe he was most likely married more than once, but he apparently married a HARRIS the first time around. Any information or clues will be deeply appreciated. Geri Kennedy-Young |

| GAINES DAVIDSON |
Monday, June 12, 2000 -- HOYT GAINES and a son GEORGE CECIL GAINES. George Cecil Gaines is reported to have been born April 1, 1926 to Hoyt Gaines and Janet Davidson-Gaines. I may have been born in another NC county. My original birth certificate was replaced with a Buncombe Co. birth certificate naming Richard Charles and Pearl Keenan Hohnbaum, my adoptive parents, as my parents on the new birth certificate. This would have been in the late 1920s. I met my birth mother before her death and several of my siblings. The other children born to my mother and dad are now all deceased. They are: Earnest Gaines, Robert Bobby) Gaines, Thelma Gaines and Hoyt Gaines. I have a living half- sister Patricia Cook-Baker still living. Our mother married a man named Mr. Cook after my dad's death. I believe my dad died when he was about 32 years of age. I have been told that my family may have come from around Hendersonville. My dad, Hoyt Gaines, was a stone mason. He and my mother were said to be from 'up in the mountains' according to stories I was told. My mother, Janet Davidson, was one of a family of girls. Some of the other girls names were Nandina and Minnie. I am so eager to know more of my family to pass on to my five children and eight grandchildren. If you have any information about the Gaines and/or Davidson families from up around Henderson, please share it with me. I am now 74 years old and am hopeful that I can learn more about my birth family while I am still on this earth. Thank you for your help. Cordially, George Cecil Hohnbaum (originally Gaines) in action in World WarII, Hoyt Gaines (deceased), Thelma Gaines. George Cecil Hohnbaum (Gaines) (mailto:marj@cei.net ) |

| MELTON | Thu, 20 Apr 2000 -- My Melton family (at that
time) started with my grandfather, Allen Leroy Melton. I've since learned
of my ggrandfather, Littleberry W. (or William Littleberry) Melton and
wife, Mary Leigh Archer Melton. (Not a very big step for having worked
on this for several years,) Both Littleberry and Mary Leigh were born in
Petersburg, VA, according to various records. In time for the 1850 census,
they moved to Morganton, Burke County, NC. (Littleberry is supposedly buried
there, but I was unable to find where.) I've never been able to find the
parents of Littleberry and Mary Leigh--partly because of burned records. Anyway, while researching at OBCGS, by accident,
I ran across a report in "The Heritage of Old Buncombe County," (I believe
I read it because of its reference to Burke Cty.) It was #241, on James
Erwin, who owned and lived at "Bellevue," a very large estate near Morganton.
Do you know of this estate? The author was W. Clark Erwin. In the article,
he states that "the house was built on a hill overlooking the Warrior Fork
and Catawba Valeys. The entire hilltop was planned and laid out by an English
landscape architect named Melton." This may be the reason I've been unable to
locate Littleberry. Perhaps, even though he always gave Petersburg as his
place of birth (and this may be correct), he might have come from England
with his father. Could that father have been the English architect mentioned
by W. Clark Erwin? Perhaps it's merely coincidence, but my grandfather,
Allen Leroy Melton, was also an architect (not the one in the book. Allen
was born in either 1848, the year James Erwin died, or 1852.) Do you happen to know if W. Clark Erwin is
still alive, and, if so, where he lives? I need to track this down. Also,
is Bellevue Plantation well known? Are there likely to be other writings
about it?
I'll very much appreciate any information you might be able to give me on this. I've really hit an ongoing brick wall. Audrey Melton Althaus althaus@earthlink.net |

Sunday, April 9, 2000 -- I am looking for any info on Sara Candis James and her husband Harvey Taylor. She was born in Nov 1862 in Tenn and Harvey was born in Nov 1861 in TN also. I first found them listed on the 1880 census report for Obion County TN and were married with (1) child Minnie. He also had a brother living with him named Matt who was born in about 1854. They stated that her father and Harvey's father were both from N Carolina. I don't have any other info on their families. I later found them listed on the 1900 census report for Dyer County TN Fowlkes with (8) children Minnie, Birt, Albert Brasfield (my grandfather), James Augness, Dixie (Nancy Caroline), Hubbard, Oliver, Newton Howard, and Clifford Harvey. The children were in Dunklin County Missouri in 1910, but nothing on the parents. If any of these people ring a bell, please let me know. I have been at a standstill for a long time. Sunday, April 2, 2000 -- I am searching for my great grandfathers family. His name was Manning (Emmanual?) Cleveland WARLICK. He married Hiley Violet HUFFMAN, daughter of Elias {Aluis} Huffman (Son of Frederick and Fanny Warlick Huffman} and Sarah BROWN (Daughter of John and Violet Brown). These relatives were living in the Caney Fork section of Jackson County. "Sam" married Violet in 1888. The marriage license states he came from Swain County. I have not found him on any census until 1900 where he was living in Rabun County Georgia. "Sam" was a Free-Will Baptist Church minister. He and family moved around creating new churches. I can find nothing on him before this 1888 marriage entry and the 1900 census. The census says he and his parents were born in NC. Can anything shed any light on Grandpa SAM and his parents/siblings? BIBLE RAULSTONE BEENE SPEEGLE MASON HASKEW |
Saturday, March 18, 2000 -- MURRAY: BLIND SOLDIER- 2 CHILDREN NC/TN: This is an interesting story. William R. Murray was a Southerner who enlisted in the Union Army in Nashville in 1863, Company I of the 10th Tenn. Infantry Regiment. Company I had "enrolled" at Battle Creek, Marion County Tennessee and this is the county where William's wife, Susan (Susannah Margaret) BIBLE, was born and grew up and where William lived most of his life. William R. Murray was born in NC, March 1842. At the end of the War Between The States, his regiment is designated as "The Governor's Guard" in Nashville. William R. Murray is found in the hospital in Nashville on numerous occasions. Shortly after the war ends, (July 20, 1865), William R. Murray marries Susan Bible. His 1923 death notice in the South Pittsburg TN newspaper reveals that- shortly after his discharge from the Union Army- he loses his eyesight and then lived for nearly sixty years as a blind man. The RAULSTONE family is closely associated with the Murray, Bible and Beene families in that out of the 7 children of George Washington Bible and Catherine Speegle Bible of Marion County TN., 5 of the children married Raulstones, 1 married a Beene and 1 married the above mentioned William R. Murray. Meanwhile, back at the Battle Creek, his daughter Flora Anna Murray was born May 16, 1866 and his daughter Nancy Caldonia (Dona) Murray was born Dec. 23, 1868. Then on March 30, 1871, Susan Bible Murray died, leaving blind William R. Murray with two small baby daughters. We find daughter Anna at the age of 14, in the 1880 Marion County Census, being raised in District 9 of Marion County by her aunt Louisa BIBLE BEENE and her husband William Owen BEENE, along with their other 3 children. However, according to the family of GEORGE WASHINGTON BIBLE and CATHERINE SPEEGLE BIBLE, their daughter Louisa BIBLE BEENE dies July 16, 1880, very soon after the 1880 census was completed. Flora Anna Murray marries Charles W. MASON and has 7 children and Nancy Caldonia (Dona) Murray marries Samuel HASKEW and has numerous children (7 in the 1900 Census. In the 1900 Census, William R. Murray is living as the spouse of C. F. Murray and next door to his 2 daughters (MASON and HASKEW) and their families in the Battle Creek area of Marion County. In 1923, we find the South Pittsburg Tennessee newspaper posting great great grandfather William R. Murray's death notice where it mentions that he had recently died in St. Cloud Florida, that he was an active Methodist, and that he was buried in the TATE Cemetery in TATE'S COVE, Battle Creek, Marion County Tennessee. MURRAY: I am endeavoring to find the parents, grandparents, g grandparents (and more extensive pedigree), and other family of William R. Murray. Is there any one reading this message who knows these people? It is my understanding that this William R. Murray (1842-1923) may have some close connection with the family of Murrays in Buncombe/Henderson/Anson Counties NC. My name is Barbara Garrett and I work at the Tennessee State Library and Archives. I would very much appreciate any help that any one can give me. bargarwar@yahoo.com |

| DOSKOCIL | Wed, 15 Mar 2000 -- I've been told that there might be a volunteer at the Old Buncombe Genealogical Society willing to look up some information for me. I will be more than happy to pay for time, postage and copy expenses. Recently, I found an obituary in the Denni Hlasatel daily newspaper, (Chicago, ILL) for my Great Uncle Frantisek (Frank) Doskocil who died in Black Mountain, NC on 31 December 1931. His body was sent back to Chicago for burial. Up to now, I have had no other information about my G.U. other than the fact that he was married to a lady named Marie and they had two daughters named Mildred and Eleanor. I have no idea why he was in N.C. on New Year's Eve since no one in the family ever spoke of his leaving the Chicago area. Is there any possibility that a death certificate might exist in N.C. for him? Perhaps a death notice in a local newspaper? The obituary in my possession states only his wife, daughters, and siblings names along with his place of burial in Chicago. I would be interested in knowing why he was in NC, how he died, anything that could help me get to the heart of his time in NC. Once again, I will pay all costs involved in gathering this information. I'm grateful for any help you can offer. Beverly Aylor, Madison, Virginia. baylor@ns.gemlink.com |
