Searching and Sharing

I have a very large database of my formal and informal research on the PACE  family of Western North Carolina.  They came to  Rutherford/Buncombe/Henderson/Polk in 1804.  The land that is now the city of  Saluda, NC was once the property of my 3rd Great Grandfather, Cornelius PACE.  It is mostly the descendents of Burrell PACE and his wife, Lydia WOODRUFF, and  their children.  I have several published genealogies and history of the PACE  family back through Surry and Edgecombe counties into Jamestown, VA from about  1615.  In addition, I can do lookups for the COLE family of Buncombe.  I have a copy of  the book by Ruth E. JOHNSON of Hendersonville, "Gathering The Clan, John Burnett  Cole - Amanda A. Todd Genealogy".  My wife and I recently donated a copy of this  book to OBCGS.   Jonathan A. Pace   Marietta, GA  (770) 422-6866

I am interested in obtaining a copy of a genealogy entitled " Genealogy of 1500 Descendants of Amos, Samuel, Stephen & Zachariah Cabe or McCabe". I  understand it was published by Macon Graphics in the mid 1980's but have been  unable to find a telephone listing. The writers are Elsie Wheatcroft & Margie  Cabe Keener.  I am a  descendant of Zachariah Cabe & a cousin stated she had a copy. Any information would be most helpful. Sincerely, Michael Thomas PO Box 1815 Goose Creek SC  29445. THOMDAV@aol.com

I would like to buy a copy of Justice/Justus/Justes written by Joyce Justus Parris. If anyone has one for sale please email me at bbuckner45@aol.com.

I'm searching for a copy (used is fine) of the McEntire/McIntyre family history probably entitled McEntires by Russell McEntire.  Apparently it is out of print.  I'm uncertain of the title except that it is on the McEntires of Western North Carolina.  People have quoted information out of it to me. I'd like to buy a copy from anyone who has one they don't want anymore.   I was told that the Genealogical Society in Shelby, NC sold copies but they say it's out of print.  Please email. The National Melungeon Registry

WHO ARE THE MELUNGEONS?

The Melungeons are most likely the descendants of the late 16th century Portuguese, Spanish and Turks stranded on the Carolina shores when the settlement of Santa Elena, South Carolina was abandoned by the Spanish. They later intermarried with the Powhatan, Pamunkey, Chickahominy and Catawba Indians.  After being abandoned in the outlying Spanish forts, they settled in the Appalachians and further intermarried with the Cherokees and much later with the northern European settlers; primarily the Scotch-Irish, becoming part of the American Melting Pot.

The word Melungeon is both Portuguese, meaning "white person" and Turkish, meaning "cursed soul."

The National Melungeon Registry has been established to collect and preserve Melungeon genealogical and historical  information.

A NEW VIDEO - 23 minutes
"BUNCOMBE BEGINNINGS - Buncombe County - through 1806."
Written and produced by Doris Cline Ward
Narrated by Jeff Allen  Appalachian Music performed by Phil Jamison
Director and videography - Jacqueline Britton - Jacqueline Britton Productions.

It is not often that something is  written for local families, and filmed in local settings but this video was written especially for Western North Carolina.  It explores the forces that brought the Germans and Scots-Irish from Europe to this area and visually tells what they went through to get here -- Indian wars, Revolution, hard work, etc. from 1700 to 1806.
Every head of household and all the women and children in the homes, together with the 73 persons listed as  slaves are given credit for helping to develop the area that became Buncombe County in 1792, but whether your family was here in 1790 or came along a little later, this video shows what it took to get from the Atlantic seaboard to Western North Carolina.  As the Cherokee Indians were pushed ever west, it was the thin edge of the wedge to open the land for the Louisiana Purchase some time later that doubled the size of the country.  It sets the stage for every development of this area since 1806.
This fast-moving film holds the attention of 8 year olds on up, pulling informative history together in an unforgetable way, climaxed by stunning pictures of the North Carolina Revolutionary experience of the Battle of King's Mountain, and the Tory hanging afterwards.  Filmed on location in the Asheville area, it was supplemented by historical scenes chosen from among the great resources here in our OBCGS library.
Buy it as a treat for yourself, and then send it to school with your children, or your grandchildren.   It was designed especially for classroom periods.  A great heritage gift for any family member.
For ordering - see the listing in the OBCGS Bookstore.
